Family planning methods. Which is better?
There are 6 types of Family Planning Method namely:
- Long Acting Reversible Method (LARC)
- Hormonal Contraceptive
- Barrier Method of Contraception
- Natural Contraceptive Method
- Emergency Contraceptive
- Permanent Contraceptive Method
, - Long-Acting Reversible Method (LARC)
- IUD that lasts for 5-10 years.
- Implant that lasts for 3-5 years up to 10 years.
It is also called “fit and forget” contraceptive because you do not need to remember them after insertion. They are ≥ 99% effective
- Hormonal Contraceptive
This includes:
1. Pills
Two types of pills:
- Combined oral contraceptive pills.
- Progesterone only contraceptive pills.
- You get an injection every 3 months.
- It is effective for about 99%.
3. Patches
- Barrier Method of Contraception
- Condoms
- Diaphram
They are easy to use, over-the-counter. It protects against STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease)
- Natural Contraceptive Method
It is by counting and avoiding ovulation days.
Coitus Interruptus.
- Emergency Contraceptive
Two options available:
- Hormonal Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP) which should be taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. It is effective up to 75-80%.
- IUD Copper T which is usually effective up to 98% and it should be inserted by your doctor within 5 days of unprotected intercourse.
When to use Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP)?
- If your barrier or condom splits.
- If you had unprotected intercourse.
- If you have vomiting or diarrhea while you are on pills.
- If you missed your injectable contraceptive.
- If you have been forced to have sex without protection.
- Permanent Contraceptive Method
Sterilization or tubal ligation is meant to be irreversible. It prevents all future pregnancies.Either tubal ligation or vasectomy, both are considered minor surgeries and done under anesthesia.
