Possible complications after Laparoscopic Hernia Repair:

No surgeon can rule out any intra-operative or post-operative complications but knowledge of anatomy, advanced skills, and experience of the surgeon will definitely reduce the chance of having a complication to almost less than 1%.

Complications are divided into intra-operative and post-operative complications.

Intra-operative complications are, for example, bleeding or injuries to organs.

Post-operative complications are for example:

• Seroma (clear fluid after surgery) formation.
• Hematoma (solid swelling of clotted blood) formation.
• Urinary retention to the level of 1.5%–4%, especially in elderly patients with prostatism.
• Neuralgia (intermittent pain along the course of the nerve) to the level of about 0.5%-4%.
• Testicular pain and swelling to the level of about 0.9%-1.5%.
• Mesh infection and wound infection (very rare).
• Consequences of the intra-operative injuries.

The complications of the open technique are nearly the same, In our opinion, non of the above is considered a major complication and should not deter the patient from considering the operation.
