Non-Surgical GERD Treatment (Stretta)

Written by Dr. Mohammad Hussein | August 31, 2016

The old classical approach of GERD invasive treatment was the laparoscopic surgical plication of the upper end of the stomach around the lower end of the esophagus to increase the tone of the one-way valve of the lower end of the esophagus and stop the gastric reflux.

One of important indication for minimally  invasive treatment  is the erosive type (Barret’s Esophagitis) which damages the lining layer of the lower end of the esophagus and cause ulceration, stricture, and can lead to cancer at the lower end of the esophagus if not treated efficiently.

Stretta It is an outbreak in the treatment of GERD with more than 33 clinical trials over the last 15 years confirming efficacy, safety, and low complication rate.

Around 70-80% of GERD patients are controlled on medication, and “Stretta” treatment has been successful in most of the other cases leaving only 5% of the patients requiring invasive surgical plication.

GERD treatment can be repeated on some occasions, if symptoms reoccur after successful application, therefore surgery is seldom indicated nowadays in a case of GERD.

“Stretta” offers approximately 90% satisfaction rate with much better symptoms and significant improvement to lifestyle. It is a unique satisfactory outcome, with more than 70% of the patients remaining without medication for the following 4-10 years.
