TMJ as with all other joints can be injured, fractured, become sore & swell that causes several issues like movement limitation for the lower jaw, pain in the head and neck area, pain while chewing, pain in the ear, neck clicking or popping sounds in the jaw when opening or closing your mouth and you might even get locking of the jaw joint.
The most common condition affecting TMJ is TMJ dysfunction (myofascial pain dysfunction). This disorder may be associated with a clicking of the TMJ joint & it’s usually characterised by pain, masticatory muscle spasm and limited jaw opening
Another serious disorder of TMJ might be a fracture to the actual articular disc & arthritis causing severe pain and swelling. However, this disorder is so rare, but it can be displaced.
TMJ pain is usually temporary but seeking medical attention is required when you face such disorders.
Your doctor can discuss with you disorder's causes & possible treatments for your problem.
