Various techniques of performing Tympanoplasty

The advice given to every patient is that he/she should first listen to all the types of risks (complications) involved and evaluate them with a rational mind. If the complications outweigh the procedure and the post-operative health then he/she should refrain from moving forward with the surgery.

Procedure Description

Based on the various techniques employed in the process, depends on the ossicular situation

1. Type 1 tympanoplasty is called myringoplasty which involves the restoration of the eardrum alone, suppose the ear ossicles are intact.
2. Type 2 tympanoplasty is used for tympanic membrane perforations where the malleus has eroded. It involves the grafting of the incus and the remains of the malleus.
3. Type 3 tympanoplasty is used for the destruction of the ossicles, with the stapes still intact and mobile. It involves placing a graft on the scale and providing protection for the assembly.
4. Type 4 tympanoplasty is used for ossicular destruction, which includes all or part of the stapes arches. It involves placing a graft onto or around the online stapes footplate.
5. Type 5 tympanoplasty so used when the footplates of the stapes are fixed.

The tympanoplasty can be performed under local or general anesthesia.

Alternative

Myringoplasty is another operative procedure which can be used for the reconstruction of the perforation of the tympanic membrane. It is performed when the middle ear, its mucosa, and the ossicular chain are intact.
