Discs are the cartilages separating the vertebrae in the spinal column. The discs are subject to millions and millions of cycles of stress during life which makes them wear and degenerate and it becomes a source of low back pain. once it is worn out, the disc material will be weak and subject to bulge, or prolapse within the spinal canal against the nerves or the spinal cord. The above applies to all discs in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar region. This bulge, prolapse, herniation, or protrusion, causes both back pain and most of the time pain which radiates to the lower extremities (sciatica). Most of these cases settle with time, and surgery is required in only 5-10 % of cases.
Micro Discectomy surgery is indicated in certain cases of :
The purpose of Microdiscectomy is to remove the cartilage fragment using a small incision without damage to the surrounding tissues. various visualization ways (microscope, loops, endoscope) can be used to achieve this target but the technique remains the same.
Microdiscectomy complications are very rare in experienced hands, patients feel much better within 24 hours, and would be able to walk within the same day following the surgery.
