Can your doctor hear your tinnitus?

The examiner can hear the tinnitus if the cause is from outside the ear canal. These include:

  • Problems with the temporomandibular joint, where your lower jaw bone meets your skull.
  • Atherosclerosis: With age, major blood vessels close to your middle and inner ear lose some of their elasticity that causes blood flow to become more forceful, making it easier to be heard by your ears
  • Head and neck tumour: Vascular neoplasm in the neck and middle ear can cause tinnitus (glomus jugular).
  • Malformation of capillary: Abnormal connection between arteries and veins (arteriovenous malformation) can cause tinnitus and turbulent blood flow in the neck. Narrowing of carotid artery or jugular vein can cause pulsatile tinnitus.
